Federico Macheda wishes Matteo Darmian good luck at Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Federico Macheda has wished Matteo Darmian the best of luck at Manchester United and feels he has all the tools to succeed at Old Trafford.

Torino have agreed a deal for Darmian to join Man United pending a successfully completed medical this week and ex-red Macheda had some words of advice for the 25-year-old.

Fellow Italian Macheda spent seven years on Man United’s book having joined from Lazio in 2007 and knows about the pressures of pulling on the shirt.

Speaking to Tutto Mercato Web, Macheda backed Darmian to be a success and feels he can thrive at United.

“Matteo must certainly expect great things when joining a world class club. I wish him all the best & feel he is ready for this adventure. Wearing the Red Devils’ shirt is certainly a big responsibility, because you feel this scary weight of history on your shoulders & realise it every time you pull the shirt on.

“Darmian has character & if he finds consistency then I am sure he’ll settle in very well. English football is much more physical & in his role it’s important to push forward as well as defend, but his characteristics already suit that.”

Macheda’s comments about feeling the pressure of the shirt weighing on his shoulders are something that is hard to consider as a fan because we sit on the other side of the fence but it comes with the territory of joining a club like United.

Not every foreign import is a success at United but from all those who have seen his growth in Serie A, they are certain he has what it takes to make it at United.

United haven’t had a consistent right-back since Gary Neville retired, apart from one season where Rafael was fantastic, and it’s a very important position if Louis van Gaal’s 4-3-3 is going to work at its flowing best.

The last player to make the move from Torino to United was Denis Law and you could say that worked out quite well. Here’s hoping Darmian can follow suit.
