Danny Welbeck explains celebration against Manchester United

by Ben Topliss

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck had mixed emotions after scoring the goal which knocked his former club Manchester United out of the FA Cup on Monday night.

Wayne Rooney cancelled out Nacho Monreal’s opener before Welbeck sealed a 2-1 victory for the Gunners with a strike late on.

The 24-year-old began his career as a youth player at United in 2001 but left last summer to join Arsenal in a ÂŁ16m move.

Welbeck celebrated after scoring the winner but said he was mindful of being respectful to United fans.

Speaking about the goal, Welbeck said: “Once the emotion takes over it’s kind of difficult to keep it in. I obviously tried to be respectful because this was a club that meant so much to me and still does.

“I’m a Manchester United fan and it’s quite hard to knock them out of the FA Cup. I’ll always respect the fans. It was a lovely reception from them and I’m very thankful for that.”

To lose against Arsenal is one thing for United fans but to lose against Arsenal thanks to a Welbeck winner is another thing entirely.

Welbeck established himself as a fans’ favourite at Old Trafford after breaking through into the first-team but a record of 29 goals in 142 appearances convinced Louis van Gaal to replace him in the summer. His replacement, Radamel Falcao, has not fared much better and the Colombian has only scored four goals for United this season.
