Darren Fletcher appointed to Man United first team coaching staff

by Red Billy

Former Manchester United star Darren Fletcher has joined the first team coaching staff, the club has announced on its webpage.

Fletcher played 342 times for the Red Devils, scoring 24 goals, before switching to West Brom in February 2015. He then spent two years with the Midlands club and two years at Stoke City before announcing his retirement in 2019.

He has since been coaching at United at Under-16 level but has today been promoted to the first team coaching staff.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said ‘Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.

‘He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.’

The former Scotland international is clearly thrilled with his promotion.

‘I am delighted to be returning to the club as a first -team coach,’ he said.

‘It’s a very exciting time for this young team and I am looking forward to taking the next steps in my coaching career by working with Ole and his staff.’

Fletcher joins fellow former players Michael Carrick and Mike Phelan on Solskjaer’s coaching team, along with Kieran McKenna.

Solskjaer is keen to keep a family atmosphere at United and was also reported by The Mail today to be involving legends Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs in a consultancy role at Carrington.
