David de Gea bio

David de Gea was brought up in Atletico Madrid’s academy in Spain and quickly established himself as a top goalkeeping prospect from a young age. Having originally been an outfield player in Atletico’s younger sides, De Gea’s breakthrough came when he picked up the gloves and became a goalkeeper on a full-time basis.

Having spent a year with Atletico’s reserves in the 2008/9 season, De Gea was then given his professional debut on 30 September 2009 during a Champions League game against FC Porto and that was the catalyst for his career. During that season, he played an instrumental role in Atletico’s UEFA Europa League winning campaign and was quickly recognised as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world.

De Gea’s progress continued the following season and with Edwin van der Sar retiring, Sir Alex Ferguson was on the lookout for a replacement goalkeeper. After a lot of speculation, when De Gea returned from winning the European U21s Championships with Spain he signed for Manchester United.

His first season in 2011/12 saw De Gea come under staunch criticism from the press having made some mistakes, but he has since responded emphatically after a shaky start at the club.

Having improved his physical attributes to cope with the Premier League, De Gea was Man United’s best player in the 2012/13 season and deservedly voted both the fans’ and Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at the end of season awards.

The following campaign under David Moyes saw De Gea emerge once again as United’s stand-out player in a poor season for the team and his outstanding performances earned him a call-up to Spain for the 2014 World Cup.

De Gea has continued to improve with every performance in the 2014/15 season and can now rightly be considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
