With the transfer season already underway in Germany and the rest of Europe to soon follow suit, I will be running a continuous series of posts that will talk about the biggest transfers across Europe looking at the confirmed transfers. I will attempt to keep the rumours minimal, only writing about those that relate to Manchester United. So, follow the blog and follow the moves of all of Europe’s biggest stars this summer.
Confirmed by Sky Sports today, Nuri Sahin has made the switch to Real Madrid in the first major transfer of the summer. The 22-year old midfielder was an integral part of the Borussia Dortmund team that won the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2001-2 season and has chosen not to pen a new deal at the Westfallen this season. With a buy out clause of just £6 million in his contract, Real Madrid did not take long to make a swoop for the diminuitive man and he will join the likes of Khedira and Ozil across the waters as Real Madrid begin to make a collection of young footballers from the Bundesliga. The reported fee is rumoured to be in the region of £8.8 million, an absolute steal for such a young and proficient talent.
I would of loved Sahin to come to United but it seems like we never had a chance to sign him as rumours suggest that Real Madrid already had a deal in place prior to the final game of the Bundesliga season. Sahin had been at Borussia Dortmund since he was 6 as he came through the academy to rise to stardom and has voiced his emotional attachment to his boyhood club:
“The decision was hard to take. I am Borussia and will remain Borussia. I will miss Dortmund.”
Personally I don’t think that Real Madrid is the best place for young talent to be nurtured as they have shown over the years that they prefer to spend big money to bring in established players rather than bringing people through their youth system. However, the lure of Real Madrid and the Bernabeu proved too much for Sahin and becomes the first, and definitely not the last, signing by Real Madrid this year as they look to build on winning the Copa Del Rey this season.
