Antonio Valencia wasn’t the only player who was all smiles when he was announced as United’s new #7. He was, for me, the stand-out choice to take on the fabled shirt after Michael Owen vacated and I think it will bring out the best of our Ecuadorian winger.
“I’m excited to be wearing the no.7 shirt in the coming season. It’s a number I really respect because so many great players have worn the shirt and made history for Manchester United in it. Now I hope I can write my own.”
After cleaning up at the Player of the Year awards following a storming second half of the season, Valencia will be looking to improve on United’s campaign last year. An uncharacteristic early exit from the Champions League and a bitter taste from the Premier League will be fuel for the team to kick on.
He said: “We are all looking forward to the new campaign. On a personal level, I want to be involved in every game, but to be honest I think more from a team perspective and I’d love us to win all the competitions we play in, particularly the Premier League and Champions League.
We are Manchester United and those are the trophies we should always be aiming to win.”
