“We’ve made a bid, they’ve been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We have to persevere. Hopefully it comes our way.” Sir Alex Ferguson
Rumours have been rife this week linking Robin van Persie with Manchester United but speaking to MUTV after losing out to Barcelona on penalties, Sir Alex has shed light on the situation in what is a strange admittance.
He has confirmed that United have made a bid to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal but that there are other clubs negotiating as well, so it is a fight for his signature. We typically keep our transfer deals under wraps until the final stages so for Sir Alex to openly admit that United were in for Moura and now for Robin van Persie marks a significant change in his transfer policy.
He said: “I can’t give you any more information. We have made a bid and they’ve been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We just have to persevere. Hopefully it will come our way. We’re trying our best but there’s no progress at this moment in time.
“I don’t have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. We’re not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal. It’s difficult to say why they’re operating this way. I don’t know what their thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away.”
Maybe he thinks that openly admitting interest will draw a player closer to the club? Who knows. Either way, considering how many top targets United have lost out on in recent years, maybe a change in approach isn’t necessarily a bad thing. At least we now have confirmation we are in for the striker – whether or not he comes is an entirely different ball game but I hope he does just so I can see Piers Morgan go into meltdown.
