Dimitar Berbatov passes Fulham medical

Dimitar Berbatov is now on the verge of leaving Old Trafford with Fulham securing the services of the striker for a reported bargain £4 million. The Bulgarian made the choice to move to London after a reported transfer to Fiorentina broke down.

He has officially passed a medical and will soon officially be unveiled by Fulham as a player.

The 31-year-old striker struggled for first team football at United with Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez and now Robin van Persie all keeping him on the sidelines. Even after winning the Premier League golden boot with 20 goals in 2010/11, Berbatov still couldn’t secure himself a guaranteed starting position but a move to Fulham will hopefully re-kindle his career.

His 56 goals in 149 appearances helped United to two Premier League title, one UEFA Champions League, one League Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.

It is the least that Berbatov deserves. Few players have ever presented themselves as well as he has at United. Even when he was dropped from the squad completely for the UEFA Champions League final, he didn’t kick up a fuss and remained the complete professional, not even questioning the decision. For this, he will always be remembered fondly.

From a hat-trick against Liverpool to a five goal haul against Blackburn, Berbatov certainly graced the Old Trafford turf with some memorable moments.  He may not have lived up to his record breaking £30.75 million price tag but he certainly won’t go down in the history books as a Kleberson-esque signing.

Fans were always split over whether Berbatov was right for United but nobody can deny the quality that he possesses. His elegant style of play of football may not have been suited to the fast flowing and pacy style of United but the least he deserves is some top flight regular first team football. At 31, he still has time to play football at the highest level and the slower pace of Fulham will no doubt suit his game.

I wish Berbatov the best of luck at Fulham and hope he can finally get himself some regular first team football, so long as he doesn’t score against United that is.
