Manchester United have been handed a Champions League group draw of SC Braga, Galatasaray and CFR Cluj. The draw was favourable as United managed to avoid Juventus, Paris St Germain and Borussia Dortmund amongst others. However, tough away trips to Portuguese outfit SC Braga and Turkish giants Galatasaray will be far from easy matches.
When United played Galatasaaray in 1993, travelling supporters were welcomed with the most hostile atmosphere that they had ever played in. Sir Alex was there on that night and will be sure that his players know what they are in for.
“We have the experience of playing against Galatasaray in the past and we will always remember the ‘Welcome to Hell’ banners” Sir Alex Ferguson
Speaking to Manutd.com about the Galatasaray fixture, he said:
“It’s always a difficult type of match.
“We have drawn Portuguese clubs a number of times over the past few years – the likes of Benfica, Sporting [Lisbon] and Porto – so we have the experience of playing in Portugal on many occasions.”
“Braga are one of the improving teams in that country.”
Romanian outfit CFR Cluj are the final team in the group and this will be their third appearance in the Champions League and when we played away in Romani last year against Otelul Galati, we came away with three points.
After last years disastrous Champions League campaign, Sir Alex will be keen to make sure that no complacency creeps into the team at any point. United are traditionally extremely strong in Europe and Sir Alex has already made sure the fans know that they will be approaching the group stage differently this year.
He said: “Obviously, we’ve never played Cluj before but, after the experience of last year, we don’t want to make any stupid errors this time.
“We will play our strongest team to make sure we get through.”
