Sir Alex: Fletcher could easily be part of the Champions League squad

by Sam Peoples

Rumours yesterday circulated that Darren Fletcher was in line for a shock inclusion in Manchester United’s 25 man Champions League squad and Sir Alex has this morning confirmed that if Darren can keep improving, there’s no reason he cannot be included in the squad.

“If he keeps doing as well as he’s doing then obviously he’ll be under consideration because he’s a fantastic player. Darren could come into the 25-man Champions League squad quite easily, without me having to leave others out because we have a number of players who qualify as youth products in addition to the 25.” Sir Alex Ferguson

Speaking at the press conference before the Southampton fixture, Sir Alex said: “He’s training well, every day. I think he’s going up to Scotland again next week to work with them [the national squad].

“He played the other night for the Under-21s and played really well. With the condition he has, though, it’s a case of wait and see.”

All United fans thought that Darren’s chronic bowel condition would be keeping him sidelined for at least this season but it seems that he is beating the battle with the illness to return faster than expected. A full 90 minute performance against Tottenham’s U21s was the latest part of his comeback to fitness and although he was far short of his typically energetic game, just the fact that he came through a whole game is massive news.

Darren has been one of our most important midfielders over recent years and we have struggled in his absence. United have certainly missed that bite in the middle of the park since Fletcher has been sidelined but if he can keep up his rehabilitation at the pace he is doing so far, we might be able to see him far sooner than we all expected and it would be a massive boost to the squad.
