Teddy Sheringham – Still on top of the table

by Sam Peoples

Every Manchester United fan remembers the heroics of Teddy Sheringham and those that didn’t get the privilege to see him play have heard the fables.  After his retirement, Sheringham took up another game and has quickly showed the same will to win there as he did in football.  That game is poker.

Sheringham joined United in 1997 and played  until 2001, racking up 104 appearances and netting 31 goals on the way. Undoubtedly his greatest year with United, and likely his career, was the 1998-99 season where he helped us to win that treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League

Sheringham continued to play until 2008 when he finally retired from the game and then took up professional poker.  It was not long before he was making waves by making a deep run at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event.  He finished the event in 14th place and the poker world was on notice that he arrived.

Since that time, Sheringham has made several deep runs in poker events including a final table in a European Poker Tour event in 2010 and he cashed in the 2012 WSOP Main Event.  While Teddy wasn’t lucky enough to win the 2012 WSOP, he has amassed an impressive $326,000 in professional poker cashes thus far.

Teddy Sheringham played with distinction with United and then channeled his desire to win into a successful poker career.  While it is hard to say whether he will achieve the same status in poker as he did in football, it appears that he is already off to a great start.
