Preview: Manchester United vs QPR

by jonnyescott

Manchester United go into Saturday’s game against a manager-less Queens Park Rangers on the back of a poor performance away to Norwich City last week. With rivals Manchester City creeping ahead of United in the league table, Sir Alex Ferguson will want his men to get back to winning ways to bring forward their renowned form heading into the busy Christmas period.

QPR are currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table with only four draws and eight losses from 12 Premier League matches and to add insult to injury, they are manager-less due to the sacking of former red Mark Hughes on Friday morning, A big and controversial decision taken by the owner Tony Fernandes to sack Hughes just 29 hours before what could possibly be labelled as their biggest game of the season so far. However, teams playing the first match after a manager change are normally vitalised, so it could serve to help them instead of hinder.

Despite being at one of the lowest points of their recent history, the West London outfit has however appointed former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp as manager but he will only take the reins next Monday, two days after the Manchester United game. Having not beaten United since New Years Day 1992 and claimed only two points out of 30 in their last ten meetings, QPR are massive underdogs going into a game which is a massive one for both clubs.

The ‘Super Hoops’, as their fans like to refer to them, will be without former Old Trafford favourite Park Ji Sung who is set to miss out due to an ongoing knee injury. Summer signing Stephane Mbia does however return after serving a three ban for lashing out at Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen but Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson miss out – and Fabio obviously can’t play against his parent club.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will be hoping to put in a good performance after two losses in four days last week. A dismal performance at Norwich was then somewhat improved on with a relatively strong performance in a 1-0 loss to Turkish giants Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Manchester United will welcome back a number of first team players including Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney as they hope to capitalise on what could be a very interesting game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as third place Chelsea host second place Manchester City in a 4pm kick off. It is vital that Manchester United get a win under their belt this weekend as it is not very often that a team of United’s standard loses three games in a week. I can see United reacting well to the past weeks result and maybe just exposing QPR’s frailties in defence.
