Valbuena’s agent admits he would only move to Manchester

by Tom Parker

Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena would only consider a move away from the club if “one of the two Manchester clubs” came calling, according to the player’s agent Christophe Hutteau.

The 28-year-old Frenchman, who has been at Marseille for over six years, is keen to extend his current to 2017. However, his agent has admitted that Valbuena could be prised away from the Stade Velodrome.

“Mathieu has given a lot to the club, he is also aware the club has given him a lot too,” Hutteau told French TV channel L’Equipe 21.

“For him, you don’t leave OM to go to Newcastle. If, one day, it’s one of the two Manchester clubs who come in for him, we’ll think about it, but so will the OM board.”

Valbuena’s current deal expires in 2015 and while his agent could be talking up a possible move away in a bid to secure a contract extension, there is a possibility of genuine interest from both United and City.

Roberto Mancini recently admitted that he will spend money in January with his side sitting seven points behind Manchester  United and while Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly said there will be no “serious business” done in the transfer window, the possibility of adding pint-sized Valbuena, who stands at just 5”5, could be appealing to Sir Alex Ferguson.

United have been linked to a number of wide players in recent weeks due to the erratic form of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, and an injury to Nani. There have been strong links to Crystal Palace’s exciting winger Wilfried Zaha as well as Tom Ince of Blackpool and Sir Alex could potentially be in the market for Valbuena, particularly if he is available at the right price.

The wide man, who has played at Old Trafford, making a substitute appearance for Marseille in 2011, would likely command a fee of around £8 million.

However, Valbuena appears to be committed to the club for the time being at least and according to the player’s agent, he is keen to help Marseille secure a return to the Champions League.

“Neither Mathieu nor myself are talking about leaving. He has the club under his skin”

“The non-qualification [for the Champions League] was merely a workplace accident. He wants to be one of the players who bring the club back into the Champions League.”

While Valbuena looks to be staying with the French club for the time being, a move cannot be ruled out, especially if an agreement to extend his contract cannot be reached.
