Roberto Martinez has tipped Angelo Henriquez to be a “real crowd favourite” for Wigan on his loan spell from Manchester United.
The 18-year-old summer signing from Universidad de Chile has joined Wigan until the end of the season and made his full senior debut against Bournemouth in their recent FA Cup third round fixture.
His appearance from the bench impressed Martinez and he almost had a dream debut but was robbed of a goal by the crossbar.
Speaking about Henriquez, Martinez said: “There is such a freshness about his play.
“Angelo’s movement was outstanding and his knack of getting a couple of yards in the box gave him a very good chance, which nearly brought him his first Wigan goal.
“I have a feeling he is going to be a real crowd favourite.”
Although he is yet to make his full United debut, Henriquez looked extremely sharp with the U21s before he was loaned out to Wigan.
In the same fashion as Hernandez, he is a natural predator in and around the box. His spacial awareness for someone so young is impressive and, matched with ferocious acceleration and pace, his knack for being in the right place at the right time was obvious from his U21s debut when he found himself acres of space and netted a header.
There’s a reason Ferguson moved fast to bring him to Old Trafford this summer. At 18, he is extremely raw but the talent is obvious. In the past, Cleverley flourished under the guidance of Martinez and it’ll be interesting to see if Henriquez can follow in his footsteps.
“Angelo tries to be very clever,” continued Martinez. “Because he is not the most physical, he avoids 50-50 contact with defenders but his running into space is really sharp and incisive.
“We do need to get to know him a little bit better. Sometimes he made some great moves and we couldn’t see him.
“But he will give us a completely different dimension.
“His attitude is incredible. He is a young man with great standards who is desperate to be successful in the Premier League.”
