Robin van Persie came 9th in the 2012 Ballon d’Or list with 1.45% of the overall vote behind Didier Drogba and in front of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Given his superb 2011/12 season, it is unsurprising that he made it into the top ten. In 52 appearances for club and country, he scored 38 goals and got ten assists – a phenomenal return for any striker.
He single handedly guided Arsenal to UEFA Champions League qualification with his 36 goals in 44 appearances and, since his move to Manchester United in the summer, has hit the ground running. In 26 appearances for the club, he has netted an incredible 20 goals and got six assists as well.
He was rewarded with a clean sweep in the English awards picking up the Football Writers’ Award, PFA Fans’ Player Award and PFA Player of the Year Award.
Last year was the first full season where van Persie avoided injury and he took full advantage of it. Given the start he has made to the season, he is well on the way to making his 2013 even better than the year before.
It’s a shame he didn’t make it into the FIFA World XI side with Ronaldo, Messi and Falcao occupying the three striker positions. Although, you can’t argue with the seasons they have had.
