The Weekly Henriquez – Bournemouth (FA Cup)

by Sam Peoples

The Peoples Person will be teaming up with Jesus Was a Wiganer each week to bring you the progress of Angelo Henriquez on loan at Wigan Athletic this season.

I have worked it out – Wigan Athletic manufactured a draw in their FA Cup Third Round match with Bournemouth in order to give Angelo Henriquez more game time in the replay!

Certainly, Roberto Martinez is not one to award Premier League starts to players he doesn’t think are ready. Two competitive cup ties, however, have pushed Angelo that bit closer to the bench, where he sits today for the Sunderland game.

The first ‘leg’ saw him rattle the crossbar just seven minutes after entering the field of play. He exhibited glimpses of quality that set him apart from many of the reserve team fringe men on the afternoon, but was ultimately starved of service as Wigan struggled to break down such resolute defence.

The replay was similarly attritional, but with a few more clear-cut chances. Henriquez drew Bournemouth keeper Jalal into a superb second-half stop and in a separate incident might have followed up Mauro Boselli’s expertly saved effort.

No goals but precious ammunition to press Angelo’s case for a place in the first team. If his chance does not come against Sunderland today, then he will surely be given another 90 minutes away to Macclesfield in the FA Cup Fourth Round. You’ll hear it first here in the (Bi-) Weekly Henriquez.
