German keeper admits Manchester United are interested in him

by Tom Parker

In a football world often dominated by the mega-rich elite of the Premier League, certain clubs and players can often go completely under the radar.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old goalkeeper Fabien Speiss made his first start for Notts County in their victory at Portsmouth.

The game at Fratton Park was watched by little over 10,000 people but nonetheless must still have been a rather daunting prospect for an inexperienced, little-known German goalkeeper.

German born Speiss joined the club’s youth academy in the 2010-11 season and this week spoke about the interest from Manchester United to the Nottingham Evening Post.

He said: “You can’t lose your head just because someone says Manchester United want you.

“I’m a young goalkeeper and I’m really happy at Notts County and determined to take my chance.”

In only his tenth professional appearance, having been loaned to both Lewes and Corby Town in recent seasons, Speiss was impressive and Notts County manager Keith Curle was effusive in his praise.

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham, Curle said of the young Germans performance: “Fabien Speiss was excellent, he put in a very assured performance.

“His handling was good, he made the correct decisions when coming for crosses and dealing with things.”

It is not the first time that the keeper has been praised in the past year with Notts County’s Head of Youth Mick Leonard saying that “he is the best young keeper I have ever seen.”

Leonard admitted in April that Manchester United had been sniffing around for a while; and lavished more praise on Speiss when speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post.

“He’s got a lot of ability and a great attitude, he’s very mature and physically very big so he commands his box.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the big clubs did want him.”

With Sir Alex Ferguson always on the look-out for exciting young talent, it is unsurprising that the young stopper has caught the eye of United.

Whether the deal will be done tonight is probably unlikely but it would come as little surprise to see Speiss join United in the not too distant future as players with potential have often been courted by the club.
