PICTURE: Ronaldo and Ferguson share a moment at full time

by Sam Peoples

Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to score tonight. It was inevitable. Anyone who believed otherwise was simply hopeful.

It might have been three years since Ronaldo left Old Trafford for the Spanish glamour of Real Madrid in a record £80 million move but tonight was surely the biggest game he has played in, on a personal level.

His goal was a reminder of times gone by at United. A powerful, towering header that the goalkeeper simply couldn’t reach – think back to the Champions League final against Chelsea and his unstoppable header against AS Roma in the Champions League also.

As we all expected him to, Ronaldo showed little celebration against a club that gave him the foundations upon which he has built his career and at full time, he made sure to have a moment with Ferguson.

When others doubted him, Ferguson put full faith in him. When Ronaldo aggravated fellow players by switching wings at random, Ferguson embraced it. He allowed Ronaldo to blossom into the player he is today, and it is something Ronaldo clearly appreciates.

Nobody wanted to see Ronaldo have a good performance tonight but there isn’t much else you can do apart from watch Phil Jones have a brilliant game man-marking him yet still watch Ronaldo net the equaliser. Let’s just hope Ronaldo can’t repeat the feat at Old Trafford in March.
