Hernandez: How on earth was Cech save even possible

Javier Hernandez seemed set to equalise against Chelsea on Monday after he connected perfectly with a Danny Welbeck cross.

But Petr Cech somehow stretched out his fingertips to divert his diving header over the bar in what he called “one of the best saves of his career”.

It proved vital with Chelsea knocking United out of the FA Cup with a solitary goal that put an end to the chance of a domestic double this season.

Speaking about the save, Cech said:  ‘I can safely state that was one of the best saves of my career.

“I knew Hernandez was waiting at the back post and I leapt in there in order to cover as much space as possible.

“I was bracing for the fact that the ball could also bounce off in an awkward direction and I managed to stick my hand up in the very last split of a second.

“It was exceptionally difficult. ‘Hernandez walked up to me afterwards and asked how on earth that was even possible.’

Despite United playing below par, it seemed a formality that Hernandez would grab his traditional goal against Chelsea having scored seven in 11 appearances against them but Cech obviously had other ideas.

Hernandez has found his game time limited this season with Welbeck regularly preferred by Ferguson despite having the best goals-to-minutes ratio in the Premier League.

But after returning from a great international break, Hernandez looked sharp against Chelsea despite the result. His brace against Honduras made it 30 goals in 45 appearances for Mexico and with  16 in 29 for United this season, he has had a fantastic return despite a lack of minutes.

There have been plenty of rumours linking Hernandez with a move away from United this summer but the Mexican has shown no desire to leave.

Ferguson has said he is going nowhere and I hope that is the case. There aren’t many better natural finishers in and around the box than Hernandez and given the improvements he has made to his all-round game this year, he is only set to get better.
