Egyptian starlet Gomaa confirms Manchester United are scouting him

Egyptian midfielder Saleh Gomaa has claimed that Manchester United are interested in signing him.

After a number of eye-catching displays for Egypt at the 2013 African U20 Championships, including scoring a cool penalty in the final (see below), Gomaa was named Player of the Tournament.

And scouts have been keeping a close eye on his progress with the club and player confirming interest from both United and Granada.

Speaking to the Egyptian press, the 19-year-old who is currently plying his trade with Egyptian side ENPPI, said: “I have been followed by a number of scouts including two from Granada and Manchester United.”

The deep-lying playmaker is something of an unknown quality but is a full international and was also involved in the Olympic games, starting against both New Zealand and Brazil.

United may not be the only team interested in Gomaa though with ENPPI chairman Mohamed Badr Al-Deen acknowledging the interest of plenty of other clubs.

“Two of the top five clubs in Italy are interested in Saleh’s services,” he said.

“This is in addition to another enquiry from Spanish Liga side Granada. We’ll consider our options and make a decision soon.”

Sir Alex Ferguson’s search for a midfielder has been long and a number of different options are believed to have been explored with Kevin Strootman appearing to be the favourite for a summer switch to United.

The weakness in the middle of the park was again clear in Monday’s FA Cup tie and with Paul Scholes looking likely to retire at the season’s conclusion, and Darren Fletcher looking increasingly likely to follow suit, reinforcements are certainly needed.

Many feel not one but two are needed in a position which has troubled United for years and the inexperienced Gomaa may fit the bill, as he would likely be a competent addition yet someone far from the finished product and relatively inexpensive.
