United beat off competition from both West Ham and Southampton to sign Buttner over the summer from Dutch outfit Vitesse in a £4 million deal to provide cover for Patrice Evra with Fabio Da Silva going out on loan to QPR.
The Dutchman has made nine starts this campaign, not too shabby considering Evra has been a virtual ever-present for the past four years.
“He is very pleased with my development.
“I am too. During the last few months, I have still been in the squad.
“I’ll surely get my chance and it is lovely to know that is the case.”
Buttner has looked good in spells during his short stay at United and has looked a big threat going forward with an impressive debut against Wigan and a solid showing against Sunderland last week.
And the increased competition which came following Buttner’s superb debut at home to Wigan has been accredited for the upturn in fortunes of the French full-back.
Converted from a left winger, it is in the defensive third where improvements need to be made to Buttner’s game if he is to assert himself as a regular for the first team.
It will of course be the future of Fabio Da Silva which will ultimately decide Buttner’s short-term prospects, as if Fabio is indeed to stay with United next season after a mixed loan spell, the popular Buttner will find himself slipping down the pecking order and may be shipped out on loan to progress.
