Derby delights: Top five Fergie-time winners vs Manchester City

by Sam Peoples

Over the years, Fergie-time has witnessed some of the most dramatic moments in United’s history – particularly against Manchester City.

But what are the best Fergie-time goals that have been scored against Manchester City? Was it Scholes’ winner at the Etihad back in 2010 or was it Owen’s dramatic winner in the 4-3 clash in 2009? Here’s my take.

5. Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United | Nani 90+4′ | 07.08.11

It might have been the curtain opener for the season but it was a fantastic game of football and very typical United, who came from behind to win. Nani chased down a Rooney clearance and forced Kompany into a mistake before he galloped towards goal, rounded Hart and gave United the winner which capped off a phenomenal turnaround after being 2-0 down at half time.

4. Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United | Scholes 90+3′ | 17.04.10

This was more of a chess game than a football match. Both sets of fans were nervous and didn’t want to lose. Step forward the smallest man on the pitch to score a header deep into injury time. Scholes’ reaction said it all as he reeled away to celebrate with the travelling fans.

3. Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City (4-3 aggregate) | Rooney 90+2′ | 27.01.10

This was a fiercely contested Carling Cup semi-final. City came to Old Trafford with a 2-1 lead from the first leg but it wasn’t enough thanks to a dramatic Rooney winner. Old Trafford really erupted when Rooney’s header went in.

2. Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City | Owen 90+6′ | 20.09.09

Has there been a more dramatic derby in history? Unlikely. Rooney put United in the lead but Barry equalised. Fletcher put United back in the lead on two occasions but Bellamy responded both times. With the scores locked at 3-3, a draw seemed inevitable. We all know what happened next. A luscious Giggs pass followed with an accomplished finish from Owen. Cue madness in Old Trafford. What a game. What a goal.

1. Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United | Van Persie 90+2′ | 09.12.12

As far as a derby debut goes, Robin van Persie had a fantastic one. United started the game phenomenally and were in cruise control until a Yaya Toure goal laid the foundations for a comeback that Pablo Zabaleta duly completed. Then, van Persie had his say. Thanks to a wimpish block from Nasri, van Persie’s free kick flicked off his heel and into the far corner of the net. Pandemonium.

Ferdinand gets a cut eye, fans go wild, players go wild. It is a goal that means so much after City winning the league the year before and since then, United haven’t looked back.
