West Ham United vs Manchester United – The starting XI

by Tom Newbold

Manchester United travel to West Ham United on Wednesday evening in a game rescheduled after initially being postponed because of FA Cup fixtures. This is United’s last midweek fixture of the season and will be perhaps the last time Sir Alex Ferguson has to consider the fitness and freshness of his players in terms of team rotation.

David de Gea – It remains to be seen whether Anders Lindegaard will feature again before the end of the season but it should be De Gea who starts in goal on Wednesday.

Rafael – The young Brazilian was left out of the squad at the weekend against Stoke but assuming no fitness issues, he should be recalled against West Ham.

Jonny Evans – Evans is set to return to the starting line-up after missing United’s last three matches due to injury.

Nemanja Vidic – The Serbian will probably get the call over Rio Ferdinand who is likely to be rested after three starts in a row.

Patrice Evra – It would be a surprise if United’s first-choice left-back didn’t start at Upton Park but Alex Buttner will probably come in for him at some point before the end of the season.

Nani – Assuming full fitness, Nani may get an opportunity to prove his worth against West Ham. He will certainly want to banish memories of his last outing and regain the form he had before then.

Michael Carrick – Carrick is unlikely to be rested with so few games left until the end of the season.

Tom Cleverley – Rested a lot recently, Cleverley should get an opportunity to return to the starting XI on Wednesday at the ground he last scored at in January.

Danny Welbeck – Welbeck has racked up a huge amount of performances this season, some being from the bench. A start against West Ham however is pretty plausible.

Wayne Rooney – A good performance against Stoke will have been a boost to under-fire Wayne Rooney and a selection further up the field behind the striker on Wednesday is in the offing.

Robin van Persie – Having broken his goal drought, Van Persie will be looking to regain the form that saw him score a wonder-goal against West Ham earlier in the season.

United West HamFormation

A typical 4-4-1-1 formation is most likely to be used against West Ham. Although, don’t be surprised if the diamond formation is used instead after its employment twice already against West Ham this season.

Shinji Kagawa, Antonio Valencia, Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones are the prime contenders to be rested for this game with the likes of Tom Cleverley and Jonny Evans coming into the side after not playing for a while. Ryan Giggs should also feature at some stage.
