Valencia: Manchester is my home and I want to retire here

by Sam Peoples

Antonio Valencia has no plans to leave Manchester United and has suggested he wants to retire at the club before moving back to Ecuador in the future.

The 27-year-old has struggled with form this year after injuries have stopped him from repeating the form that made him United’s Player of the Year in 2012.

But despite his downturn in form, Valencia is looking forward to the challenge ahead still.

Speaking to Ecuadorian Radio La Deportivo, Valencia quashed any rumours of him leaving United.

“Neither the club or the coach have said anything about that (leaving Manchester United), I think it was a rumour that came about in Ecuador more than anywhere else,” he said.

“This [Manchester] is my home, I would like to stay here for a lot longer and retire here before going back to Ecuador.”

Valencia has been far from his best having only scored his first goal of the season last week against West Ham.

But his last five performances have been his best football this year and we are starting to see Valencia overcome the broken leg injury that has thwarted his progress.

“When I had the problem with my leg I recovered mentally without any difficulty,” he said.

“But the problem with my back was something that affected me for a lot longer, but now I am fine and physically much better.”

Given how poor our wingers have been this year, Valencia’s recent upturn in form is well timed. I’d be very surprised if one of our wingers wasn’t sold this year and Valencia’s return to his old self has done his confidence the world of good, something Ferguson has noticed given that he has started the last few games.

He continued: “I am very happy, this is my second championship here.

“I have the confidence that the coach has given me and when you go into a match with the confidence of the team, it gives you extra motivation.”

On his day, Valencia is a machine and you can’t stop him. United have missed his direct play out on the wings and it is great to see him playing more like the player who tore the Premier League to shreds last year.
