Rafael admits he is trying to tempt Neymar to join Manchester United

by Tom Parker

Rafael has admitted that he has been trying to tempt Brazil team-mate Neymar to join Manchester United this summer.

Both reached the 2012 London Olympics final together with Brazil and despite losing out on the gold medal, it was a great tournament for the pair.

But despite his time in England during the Olympics with the national side, Rafael admitted the Santos star is likely to move to Spain with both Real Madrid and Barcelona keen on the highly rated forward.

Speaking to Fox Sports Radio, Rafael said: “I wanted him to come to Manchester but I think it is difficult at this moment.

“I think he will choose Spain and perhaps this is the best option for him at Barcelona or Real Madrid. I think it is time for him to come to Europe.”

The 21-year-old striker is one of the most sought after players on the planet and looks set to make a move to Europe soon.

Neymar has scored 135 times in 215 appearances for Santos who he has been with since the age of 11 and also has an exceptional record for Brazil, scoring on 19 occasions in just 31 games. A phenomenal tally given the fact that he is just 21.

Many in Spain have reported that Neymar has already signed a deal with Barcelona and will join the Catalan giants either this summer or after the 2014 World Cup in his homeland and he would likely command a sizeable fee with Santos under no real pressure to sell their prized asset given the flourishing Brazilian economy and league.

Rafael collected his 3rd Premier League medal in just five seasons with the club on Monday and has emerged as a fans favourite for his consistent, marauding displays this season.

He has curtailed the defensive mistakes which blighted his early seasons and shaped himself into arguably the best right back in the Premier League.

And if he can bend Neymar’s ear towards a United move, the likeable 22-year-old could surely enhance his cult-hero status further.
