Robin van Persie seemed to forget that he joined Manchester United when he return to the Emirates yesterday before kick-off as he almost walked into the home dressing room!
The Dutchman expectedly saw his every touch booed by home fans on his return to the Emirates since joining United in the summer but despite what was a hostile atmosphere for him, he coolly slotted home a real pressure penalty to get on the score sheet and bring United level.
It was a classy performance from van Persie. His last hurrah was at full time when, after clapping the travelling away fans, he applauded each corner of the Emirates.
He might have nearly done it by accident before kick-off but van Persie did go into the home dressing room after the full time whistle to sit down with his old team mates Wenger admitted.
“He’s in our dressing room at the moment — because our food is better than in the away dressing room,” he said.
“You know people who play together for five six years.
“They fought, though — our defenders didn’t make life easy for him at all. They played with great commitment.”
Yesterday was a great showing of mutual respect between rivals with Arsenal’s players giving United a guard of honour before kick-off and van Persie‘s individual respect to both the players and fans was great to see. Football is bigger than rivalry.
