Anders Lindegaard: 5 Didn’t look too convincing throughout the match. Flapped at aerial balls and failed to deal with corners. Did get down well to deny Oscar in the early exchanges, pushing his shot onto the post. Having not played in such a lengthy period, it was understandable he was lacking match confidence. However he can not be criticised for the goal as the shot from Mata was deflected which took it further away from the Dane.

Rafael: 3 Kept Moses quiet and got himself forward at any opportunity he had before spectacularly losing his cool in the final minute of the match by kicking out at David Luiz. A reminder of his naivety and rashness at the start of his United career. Such a shame as he’ll miss the remaining fixtures this season in a campaign that has seen him come of age. Here’s hoping today is a one-off.

Nemanja Vidic: 6 Typically strong in the air as the Serbian had a solid game at the back but could possibly be slated for allowing opposing players a little too much space in front of him to run into. Also unusually got forward down the left channel for the final attack of the first half and beat his man before picking out a red shirt in the box but the chance came to nothing.

Jonny Evans: 5 Jonny wasn’t tight enough on Demba Ba for several occasions in the first half and was lucky that the striker clinical with his chances. Improved as the match went on, understandable as he hadn’t played much in the past couple of months.

Patrice Evra: 6 Considering the grief Mata has caused Evra in the last few games, the French left-back did well to cope with him this afternoon. He never really got forward as much as he would’ve liked to against the young Chelsea right-back so his main contributions were defensive.

Antonio Valencia: 4 A bloke sat behind me shouted “put a ball in the box, you infuriating w**ker”. That pretty much summed up his performance. Although he gave left Cole in his wake at times, he failed to deliver any kind of final product, fluffing his lines far to frequently. With the addition of Zaha and with players remaining from injury, we can hope that Tony will up his game if he wants any kind of future at this club.

Phil Jones: 6 Mainly sat in front of the United back four as his defensive qualities were needed today. When getting an opportunity to attack, Jones spurned a great chance as he was caught in two minds whether to go for goal or to cross for van Persie. In the end his cross-cum-shot sailed harmlessly wide.

Anderson: 7 The best out of a bad bunch. With the absence of Carrick, he was the heartbeat of the home team’s midfield. His distribution to fellow team-mates as he ran from box to box was decent, it is just the recipients of the pass who were letting the side down.

Tom Cleverley: 4 Played just off the striker for the most part before he was taken off, a position which he did not excel at. Tom took numerous shots at goal with none hitting the target. With his final third presence being nullified by Luiz, he was a by-stander for most of the game.

Ryan Giggs: 6 Lacking the pace he has lost with age, he certainly is still creative enough to find space to deliver some excellent balls into his striker. Also combined well with Anderson.

Robin van Persie: 5 Showed some fancy footwork at times but didn’t display his usual danger and conviction in front of goal, slicing one effort wide and heading straight into Petr Cech’s arms for example.

Substitutes-

Wayne Rooney: 5 Did make an impact on the game as he headed over soon after he was introduced. Looked for a foul in the build up to the goal, only to see the referee waving away his appeal.

Alex Buttner: 5 United fans have wanted to see how well Buttner can play on the left flank with our wingers playing awful this season he’d be an option you’d imagine. Alas we only saw 20 minutes of him, in which he didn’t have time to make his mark on proceedings.

Javier Hernandez: N/A The Little Pea’s exclusion from the starting eleven was disappointing considering his excellent goal-scoring record against the Chelsea. Should’ve been thrown on much earlier in the game.
