Proof that Ferdinand is right about van Persie and Bale

Rio Ferdinand has criticised the PFA Player of the Year voting system for not being a ‘true reflection’ of the Premier League season as a whole and believes that Robin van Persie should have won the top prize.

The 34-year-old believes that the availability of modern technologies means that the vote should be taken at the end of the season to reflect the campaign as a whole.

“I think Robin should of won it if I am being honest,” Ferdinand said in an interview with Manutd.com

“I’m not just being biased but I just think the problem with me with the PFA Awards is that the voting system is flawed.

“There is so much technology at hand that you can do it over an iPad at the end of the season.

“If it was voted for today, van Persie would win it by a country mile but it was voted by the players at the end of February.

“So I think that is where it is disappointing as it isn’t a true reflection of the season.”

Ferdinand makes a very fair point in the fact that almost a third of the season is not taken into account when it comes to the voting system.

Looking at their statistics of the whole Premier League season, van Persie was more consistent than Bale was over the season despite his ten game drought in the February/March period and his form since getting over his goal drought has been phenomenal.

Bale deserved to be praised given his 20 goals and five assists in 30 starts but over the course of the season, van Persie spearheaded United to the title with 25 goals and eight assists in 33 starts and deserved the award.

The voting system should be modernised as technologies could provide instant votes which would allow the players to take into account the whole season before placing their vote.

Despite missing out on the award, van Persie is still on course for the Premier League Golden Boot and is a top candidate for United’s internal Player of the Season awards.
