Marouane Fellaini is already a Red Devil

by Sam Peoples

With the appointment of David Moyes at the helm of Old Trafford, there could not be a better time for Manchester United to solve their growing midfield problems.

A name that will strongly be linked to United will be Marouane Fellaini and according to his Twitter account, the Belgian is already a Red Devil.

Despite merely being a coincidence, 25-year-old Fellaini would be considered by some to be a great signing for the club. His 6ft 4 broad frame makes him a real presence in the middle of the park and with 12 goals in 34 games for Everton this season, he has been instrumental in their quest for European football.

Fellaini has certain attributes that the current United team lacks. His known aerial ability, versatility, defensive skills and all-round play could provide United with the bite and stability in the middle of the park they have lacked. With the Premier League known for its physicality, United have come short against the bigger teams in Europe in aspects such as off the ball movements, mostly due to the lack of a midfielder that can retain the ball in the first effort of trying.

Manchester United have been heavily reliant on Michael Carrick this season and fortunately, an injury-free season has meant that the Englishman has only missed two league games this season.

Being a natural ball-stroker in the park and master of technique, movement and creativity, Carrick has been a key figure for United in their 20th title triumph.

But to relieve the pressure from his back, United need to buy a man who is versatile enough to bring strength to the defence but also talented enough to be able to bring the ball forward.

Fellaini would be a fitting first signing for David Moyes. He has blossomed under his watchful eye at Everton and with the Belgian national side brooding some real talent right now, Fellaini will have an international edge to his game.

He would certainly provide comfort to the eyes of Manchester United fans who have seemed to struggle to find a Roy Keane-like player ever since the Irishman’s departure from United in 2005.
