With the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award and Players’ Player of the Year awards being handed out on May 15, Robin Van Persie‘s name is my stand-out candidate to grab one, if not both, awards at the ceremony.
He looks on course to receive the Premier League Golden Boot at the end of the season for his individual efforts and can rightfully brag that he has won the Red Devils 26 points though his goals alone.
From his first goal against Fulham, he has had a barnstorming season that is littered with memorable moments. A stunning hat-trick away at Southampton, a dramatic last minute winner against Manchester City in his derby debut, a wonderful touch and finish to save United against West Ham in the FA Cup and an out-of-this-world volley against Aston Villa – all but a few of his incredible moments.
He’s got a bit of everything in him. Sharp movement, finishing, heading, technique and a bit of strength to go with it. When he’s not scoring, he’s getting back. When he’s helping the team out by dropping back, he’s still scoring.
“You get spells that don’t go so well, when you don’t score so many goals. And I had one of those this season. Even so, I kept clearing headers from corner kicks, I cleared balls off the goal-line, I set up team-mates to score goals.” Van Persie
The other candidates that would give van Persie a run for his money would be Michael Carrick. His consistency to turn up in every game he has played in with added reliability has proven this to be without question Carrick’s best season in an United shirt thus far. Rio Ferdinand’s impressive season in which he has shrugged off all critics that were ready to spark off a rumour that his United days were numbered is potentially his best ever in a United shirt.
But Robin Van Persie joined Manchester United in his prime in the summer of 2012 with the sole intention of trophies. Nine months on, he has got just exactly that.
And hopefully the Premier League trophy in his debut season is just the start of what will hopefully be a glistening end to his career at the top.
