Manchester United confirm duo’s departure from club

Assistant manager Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have been released by Manchester United as part of a staff shake-up at the club.

“I would like to put on record the club’s thanks for everything Mike and Eric have done. I will be looking to appoint my own members of coaching staff at some point in the future, however, I’d like to take this opportunity to give them both our best wishes for their future careers.” David Moyes

It ends a career long association with the club for Phelan who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1989 before becoming assistant manager under Ferguson since the departure of Carlos Queiroz in 2008 and

Eric Steele also joined the club in 2008 as goalkeeping coach and has been publicly lauded for being one of the cornerstones in David De Gea‘s rise to form this season.

It is sad to see both of them go. Behind the scenes, Phelan was considered a very good man manager and given the success that United have had since 2008, Phelan has to take some credit for that.

And it will be a testing time next season for De Gea after the departure of Steele as he has been a father figure for the Spaniard since his arrival at the club.

Both have left the club on good terms and will hopefully go on to have more success elsewhere.

Moyes is expected to bring Everton’s long-standing goalkeeping coach Chris Woods with him as a direct replacement for Steele.

It is unsurprising to see them go given Ferguson’s departure from the club but there is still no word on the future of kit man Albert Morgan and more importantly, first-team coach Rene Meulensteen.

For me, Rene is my favourite choice to be Moyes’ right-hand man. He’ll need someone next to him who knows the club and what better person than Meulensteen who has coached the youth and reserve teams in the past and has been the first-team coach for six years.

There is real speculation as to whether Meulensteen will depart but of all the back room staff, his departure would be the biggest loss to United.
