PICTURE: Work has begun at Old Trafford

“The pitches over the last few weeks have not suited Darren. They are really heavy pitches. Unfortunately, Old Trafford seems to have collapsed in the last two weeks. We have had six great years out of the pitch. Our groundsman, Tony Sinclair, has done a fantastic job. But it is looking tired now and I think we will have a new pitch in the summer.” Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United have began to dig up the Old Trafford pitch as part of an £800,000 overhaul to replace the surface with a part synthetic pitch similar to the grass at Wembley.

Cranes have been hard at work inside the stadium since the Legends match against Real Madrid that was the last to be played on the surface.

It is the first time in ten years that the pitch at Old Trafford will be completely replaced but it is a much needed move given how badly the pitch cut up at times last season.

The part synthetic pitch should provide a more stable surface and given how Wembley has overcome it’s pitch troubles at the start to host two Champions League finals in three years, it is a testament to the durability of the surface.
