Uruguayan flown to England to finalise Manchester United deal

by Sam Peoples

Guillermo Varela has flown into England this week ahead of completing a €1.8m move to Manchester United, strong reports suggest.

Penarol, Varela’s club in Uruguay, have sent club representative Rodolfo Catino to London alongside the 20-year-old full back to finalise a deal only a week after an initial bid was reportedly rejected.

The right-back had spent time on trial at Carrington towards the end of last season and trained with the first-team where he impressed and it looks likely that he will become the first signing under David Moyes.

Speaking on his trial with the club, Varela was ‘very happy’ with how his trial period went and he obviously left a lasting impression at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Tirando ParedesVarela said: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test with Manchester United. I’m glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel.

“I was treated so well and Chicharito [Javier Hernandez] helped me a lot. The work outs were short but very demanding.”

United have had a succession of South American players come to Old Trafford in recent years with the likes of Hernandez, Henriquez, the Da Silva twins and Anderson, and it looks like Varela will become the first signing under Moyes.

Fans will get a chance to see Varela in action this summer as he will be taking part in the U20 World Cup in Turkey at the end of June.
