Is leaving Manchester United the best move for Nick Powell?

“We’ve put our hat in the ring [to sign Powell on loan].” John Ryan

Doncaster Rovers have been linked with a loan move for Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell.

Chairman John Ryan has confirmed that Rovers are looking into the possibility of recruiting Powell on a temporary basis next season.

New boss Paul Dickov is looking for his first signing and 19-year-old Powell would be an extremely useful in the Championship with his flexibility and proven goal scoring record in the lower levels of English football.

His scorcher of a goal in the League Two Play-Off final at Wembley helped Crewe to win promotion to the League One but he moved to United straight after.

Powell was limited to just six first team appearances last season with two of those games coming in the Champions League against Galatasaray and Cluj.

He scored his debut goal within 11 minutes of being brought on against Wigan at Old Trafford and when he got his opportunities, he showcased why Ferguson believed in him enough to label him the new Paul Scholes.

“Young Nick had a small operation to relieve a problem he had and he’ll also be available for pre-season training.” Nick Powell

And whenever Powell has been in action with the U21s this season, he looked a class above the opposition and was easily the best player on the pitch.

But injuries and a lack of first team action summed up the second half of Powell’s season and it was completely cut short in April when he had surgery that ruled him out until the start of next year.

Despite Moyes’ desire to promote youth at Old Trafford, it is unlikely that he would be willing to experiment the youth at the club at senior level immediately given that his priority would be to consolidate the first team in his first few months in charge as he begins to feel at home.

Therefore, a loan move for Powell for the campaign would be an ideal one for both parties. A temporary move would help Powell in his development with several Championship clubs reported to having an interest in signing him and at just 19, there is no doubt that Powell has a bright future ahead of him at United.

It may be premature to say that Powell is an eventual like for like replacement for Scholes but with the quality that the young man has shown at the club already in his limited moments, there is no reason why he can’t fulfil that potential in the future.
