EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Why Manchester United have signed a ‘star player’

by Sam Peoples

Guillermo Varela became Manchester United’s first signing of the summer when he joined in a reported £1 million deal.

The 20-year-old right-back from Uruguay’s Penarol made the move after impressing during a trial period at the club and penned a five contract.

Not much is known about Varela as he had limited first team appearances with Penarol before making the move so The Peoples Person had a chat with Rodolfo Catino, Penarol’s youth president, to find out more about our new signing.

rodolfoCould you please introduce yourself to the readers Rodolfo?

My name is Rodolfo Catino and I am the president of Peñarol Club’s Youth Division and am also pro-treasurer of the club.

I have been a member of Peñarol since I was born and I have been working in the club in these last six years and have been in constant communication with the rest of the directors board.

I had the opportunity to know Guillermo since his beginnings at Penarol. I remember him playing in the weekends in the different teams (U16/17s) and he always showed outstanding quality and commitment.

Are you excited about Guillermo Varela‘s move to Manchester United?

For us, it is really satisfying to see Guillermo continuing his career in one of the worlds most important clubs at United. It is also meaningful for us in the fact that you can see the quality of our players.

Do you think he is good enough to make it into the first team this season at Old Trafford?

In Manchester, there are players of the highest level and this makes it very difficult to Guillermo to gain his place straight away.

Anyway, we are sure that in a short time Guillermo will be an outstanding player and will be an integral part of the club.

He didn’t play very much for the first team at Penarol. Why was this?

He has had a lot of activity for the Uruguay U20s and at the beginning of the season, he had a small and irrelevant injury which made the first team coach choose other two players on the understanding that Guillermo would not be available.

He is not a considerably tall player but he has a good aerial ability and his speed, agility and tactical awareness make him a good player.

What sort of player is Guillermo Varela? Could you describe his playing style to the readers.

He is a versatile footballer who has the ability to play in different positions on both wings. His best tactical position is right-back as that is where he has been developed.

He is an applied player with a real ability to combine forward runs with defensive discipline and he has a good capacity to mark due to his speed and as he has a great technique, he is able to make split decisions an execute them quickly. Playing on the counter-attack is something he is very accustomed to doing.

He is not a considerably tall player but he has a good aerial ability and his speed, agility and tactical awareness make him a good player.

He will be in action for the Uruguay U20s in the World Cup. Do you think he has a chance of winning the tournament?

Since the Uruguayan team arrived to Turkey, they have had some injuries but we are confident of their selection that would see Guillermo play alongside Cristoforo and Aguerre in a defence that would have a good chance of winning the tournament.

I am personally convinced that Guillermo will be one of the star players for Manchester in a short time.

How good can Guillermo Varela become in the future?

I am personally convinced that Guillermo will be one of the star players for Manchester in a short time.

He is a great footballer and a great person and when these two elements are together, the result is the success.

In the near future, I am confident we will see Guillermo playing for the senior Uruguayan national team and for the first team at United.
