Manchester United have had a bid for Leighton Baines rejected by Everton as David Moyes makes his first move in the transfer market.
The bid was reported to be between £10-12 million but it wasn’t enough to prise the 28-year-old left back away from Merseyside.
Over the past few seasons, Baines has become the most consistent left-back in England so it is unsurprising that Moyes wants to bring him to Old Trafford.
What a bid for Baines does do is raise some questions over the future of Patrice Evra given that the Englishman’s arrival would see Evra’s game time cut with Buttner and Fabio also waiting in the wings for an opportunity.
Despite the 32-year-old Frenchman being in his best form in years last season it is widely believed that a move back to Monaco, where United bought him back in 2006, could be on the cards given their summer spending spree.
Evra is coming towards the twilight of his career and if United could get £10 million from Monaco and spend £15 million on Baines, it would be a great deal. Maybe United can throw in Buttner or Fabio on a season long loan to sweeten the deal too which would give them some great Premier League experience.
I’d hate to see Evra leave given that he has been such a fantastic servant to the club but in a season full of change, it would make sense to bring Baines in if the cash outlay was only £5 million.
And you couldn’t begrudge Evra getting a final pay day given that he has played 40 or more seasons for the past six years at Old Trafford.
