Barcelona legend urges Thiago to join Manchester United

Johan Cruyff has urged Thiago to move away from Barcelona if the club cannot guarantee him enough first team football next season.

The former Barcelona player, manager and ex-European Player of the Year believes that regular football should be the priority for the playmaker who was named Player of the Tournament at the U21 European Championships in Israel.

The 22-year-old has been behind Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas in the pecking order under Tito Vilanova. As a result of not playing the sufficient amount of games required, Thiago’s release clause has temporarily come down to €18m from €90m until the end of July.

And Cruyff has advised him to leave if Barcelona can’t guarantee him the first team football he needs to help him get into Spain’s 2014 World Cup squad.

“At this point comes the philosophy of the club – you should assign, sell and invest in a player and do it as what you think is right,” he said.

“If he really has little chance to play, then he has to go. It all depends on Barcelona’s plans.

“If there is little chance that he will get regular playing time, he should leave.

“However, if Barca tell him that he will be a starter, he should stay put. It’s all quite simple really.

“Thiago has a lot of quality and he has plenty of time as he’s still young. Any decision he will take will prove to be a good one.”

With Paul Scholes retiring, Darren Fletcher not expected to regain full fitness following his illness, Anderson not cutting it and Cleverley not providing the extra edge, concerns within the heart of the midfield besides Michael Carrick have been a growing problem.

It seems that United are two or three players short of challenging for the Champions League and with the competition for the defence of their Premier League title set to be as tight as ever next season, it remains vital that David Moyes fills in the missing gaps in the summer to stamp out the weaknesses in the side.
