VIDEO: United’s new signing teaches Spain a lesson

Guillermo Varela‘s Uruguay overcame heavy favourites Spain 1-0 after extra time in their quarter final of the U20 World Cup this week.

And the 20-year-old had his best game of the tournament so far with an indomitable display from right-back that completely kept Spain at bay.

Varela has played every single minute for Uruguay in the competition (except a few minutes at the end of their game with Spain due to cramp) and on route to the semi-final, Uruguay have only conceded four goals.

From crunching tackles to well timed interceptions, it was a text book performance from a right-back that Spain simply had no answer to.

For me, watching Varela reminds me of a younger Rafael. The natural South American tenacity bubbles over into his game with his tackling sometimes leaving much to be desired but his attacking nous comes easily, with marauding runs a regular part of his game.

Like Rafael, Varela will have to learn the discipline necessary to be a right-back in the Premier League but from what we have seen from him so far out in Turkey, it was £1 million well spent.

When he sat down with The Peoples Person, his agent was confident that Varela will be a big hit at Old Trafford and judging from his calibre of performance against Spain, there is no reason why that cannot happen in the future.

Catch Varela in action at the U20 World Cup on July 10 in the semi-final against Iraq.

Here are his personal highlights from the 1-0 victory over Spain. My personal favourite moment come with his fantastic show of footwork (and nutmegging skills) at 1.55. Eat your heart out, Iniesta.
