David Moyes has hailed Ryan Giggs after being stunned by how impressive the veteran winger during his first week as Manchester United manager.
The 39-year-old Giggs was arguably our best wide player last season. For someone so old, he still possesses a very quick turn of pace and has bags of ability left.
But Moyes admitted he was taken aback at just how good Giggs still was after all these years at the top of the game.
“I’ve got to say Ryan has been brilliant,” he told talkSPORT.
“To get close to him, what a player he is. I’m stunned, I really am, at how good he is.
“We’ll use him as part of the coaching staff. He’s learning as well and he is involved with all the meetings and discussions.”
There was a time last season where Giggs looked like it could be his last season at the club with silly mistakes creeping into his game.
But once January turned, so did Giggs. His phenomenal record of scoring in every Premier League season continued and and he defied the belief of most to be able to do it at the top of the game.
Giggs has now taken up a dual role with the club after being first-team coach alongside Philip Neville as part of a backroom staff shake-up by Moyes, and it is a smart move by Moyes for both himself and the club.
“Neville knew how I worked at Everton and was my captain and he is aware of how I work,” Moyes continued.
“I wanted to keep a younger element to my staff as well and they have big Manchester United connections.
“They know how the club works better than I do, so I wanted to make sure there was a connection between Manchester United and it wasn’t just me bringing my Everton staff in and I hope we blend well together.
Moyes has done very well in bringing Giggs and Neville into the coaching staff alongside his trio of Everton coaches. It will provide the sort of continuity that every new manager needs a new club.
And working closely with the players, Giggs and Neville will be able to pass on valuable lessons that should improve the mentality of our younger players. What better way to learn than from two men who have won a lot of trophies at the club? There isn’t one.
