Manchester United have initiated contact with Real Madrid over Luka Modric according to the respected Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italy.
He claims that Jose Mourinho demanded Modric’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu and now that he has moved to Chelsea, the 27-year-old would consider a move away from the club.
United were strongly linked Modric when it was clear that he was going to leave Tottenham Hotspur but Daniel Levy refused to sell his midfielder to a domestic rival.
And the fact that Madrid have signed Isco and Illarramendi, two midfielders, so far in the transfer window certainly places a question mark over how much game time Modric would get next season under Carlo Ancelotti.
Every time United played Tottenham Hotspur and in the Champions League fixtures last year, Modric always stood out. His 30 minute cameo against United at Old Trafford was the lynch pin behind Madrid’s turnaround, least not for the fantastic goal he scored.
Now that Ed Woodward has flown back to Manchester in order to sort out some transfer business, plenty of players are going to be linked with the club and Modric is the latest in a line of midfielders to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Although there is no way to know who is going to come, it looks an almost certainty that United will be making this summer their busiest window in years.
