Jones happy to be utility man at United this season

by Tom Parker

Phil Jones has admitted he has had no contact with David Moyes over what position he’ll play next term but is ready to fill in wherever he’s required to.

Since joining United two summers ago, Jones has been used at centre back, right back and in a central midfield role but has struggled to nail down a regular slot in a single position, something which many feel is counter-productive to the 21-year-old’s development.

And despite his long-term future lying at the heart of the United defence, Jones has again insisted he doesn’t mind where he’s fielded, simply enjoying playing in any position for the Champions.

“We haven’t spoken about it yet, but I’m sure as the tour progresses then it will arise,” he told ManUtd.com.

“It’s like I said last season when I was playing right-back, centre-back and centre midfield, I just enjoy playing football and if that means playing in different positions then that’s fine, I just want to play. Hopefully I can play plenty of games.”

Jones did state in January that his best position is at centre-back but it is central midfield which for the moment at least gives Jones a more realistic chance of establishing himself in the short-term after successful outings against Real Madrid and Everton as a defensive midfielder and a comparative lack of competition.

His performances last season demonstrated consistency and maturity beyond his years drawing widespread acclaim with Sir Alex Ferguson going on record stating that Jones could be the club’s best ever player, which is not beyond the realm of possibility if the England international continues to develop so quickly.
