Thiago Alcantara has spoken out about Manchester United’s pursuit of him for the first time and claimed that at no point did he speak to the club about a potential transfer.
Only this week, Thiago’s father Mazinho claimed that United were in talks with Thiago prior to his involvement with Spain at the U21 European Championship.
But speaking to radio station RAC1, Thiago has contradicted that statement and labelled any links with United as fabrication by the press.
“The truth is that in no moment did United come to us and talk to us. It came from the press, it was always a lie,” he said.
Thiago’s potential move to United was front page news for two weeks in Spain. Every publication picked up on it and it wasn’t until Pep Guardiola’s comments that Munich’s interest was shown.
Even after Thiago has made his move to Bayern Munich, this transfer saga goes on now that Thiago has gone against what his father has said. One of them is lying. His father Mazinho may well have fabricated the United interest to show both Barcelona and Bayern that his son was a wanted player.
The optimist in any United fan would hope that it is Thiago who is lying because if United did not show genuine interest in a 23-year-old midfielder with world class potential who was available at €18 million, then it would be worrying.
