Fabregas set to announce decision after United given fresh hope of signing him

Cesc Fabregas will hold a press conference during Barcelona’s pre-season tour of Bangkok and Malaysia where he is expected to announce a decision on his future according to Spain’s El9.

The 26-year-old has remained silent ever since David Moyes officially confirmed Manchester United had submitted a bid to try to lure him away from Barcelona.

His silence has done nothing to cool speculation and now Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has admitted that Fabregas’ decision is up to him, placing the ball firmly in his court as to whether he will leave the club. It gives United fans hope because only last week Martino insisted that Fabregas was not for sale at any price, so he has backtracked on that by now stating the decision is up to Fabregas rather than the club.

Arsenal fans remain insistent that Fabregas would never join United but if Fabregas had no desire to even contemplate leaving Barcelona, then why has he not stated so in public?

Only this week, rumours emerged linking Juventus midfielder Marchisio with a €30m move to United but he released a statement the very next day saying that he wanted to end his career in Turin. Like Rooney, Fabregas is weighing up his options before making a decision.

I don’t think the fact that Arsenal have a clause in his contract is an issue because Fabregas wouldn’t leave Barcelona for a club that simply isn’t currently competing at the highest level. Arsenal fans might insist that his previous spell at the club would rule him out of a move to United but the history pages show that sometimes players make moves that angers fans; Luis Figo, Fernando Torres and Ashley Cole for example.

When United first confirmed an official bid for Fabregas, United fans thought it was a signing that could never materialise but Martino saying that Fabregas’ decision is now up to him indicates that the club is willing to sell him if he so wishes.

It is hard not to get excited by the prospect of a world class midfielder like Fabregas joining United. This saga may turn out like so many have previously but there are certainly reasons to suggest that Fabregas is thinking about joining up with Robin van Persie at Old Trafford.
