Sevilla may have spoiled the party last night by beating Manchester United 3-1 in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial but the score was always irrelevant, it was the occasion that mattered.
From scoring a last minute winner against Liverpool in the Stretford End to a protracted contract saga in 2005, Ferdinand’s United career has had its highs and lows but few would argue against how good a defender he has been.
For me, Ferdinand has been the best defender I have had the pleasure of seeing play at United. The master of composure, he was at the centre of United’s most successful period in history and he was, in part, the linchpin at the heart of our defence that helped make it happen.
Arguably last season was Ferdinand’s best at United and at 34, he looks to have put his fitness problems behind him. He admitted that he wanted to continue playing for a couple of years and the longer he does, the better off United are going to be.
Stay on your feet, Rio.
