Manchester United agree deal to sign talented centre-back

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have struck a deal to sign promising defender Jimmy Dunne on a four year deal from Irish side Dundalk when he turns 16 in October.

The 15-year-old centre back has been on United’s books for the past five years having been part of the Belfast academy since the age of ten.

He previously captained Dundalk in Northern Ireland’s Milk Cup and played in the Dublin and District Schoolboys League team.

Despite interest from Aston Villa and Chelsea, the 6″2 defender chose United and admitted that his decision was easy to make after visiting Carrington.

dunne-irishSpeaking to the Irish Independenthe said: “There were other teams interested but from the minute I went to Carrington, I knew that was the right move for me.

“It’s a huge club with a great history and they have been very supportive of me right from the start.

“I know it will be a massive challenge but I will be surrounded by good players and excellent coaches and that can only help improve my game. I can’t wait to get started.”

United’s academy director Brian McClair was personally involved in trying to persuade and the club’s approach was what persuaded Dunne’s family.

There have been plenty of Irish youngsters blooded through our academy such as Jonny Evans and John O’Shea, so Dunne will be hoping to follow in their footsteps.
