Manchester United’s not so urgent transfer business

by Sam Peoples

Ed Woodward was spotted in Wembley as Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 to lift the Community Shield on Sunday.

It was the first time he has been seen since returning early from United’s pre-season tour nearly four weeks ago on ‘urgent transfer business’ that has so far only officially culminated in two rejected bids for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas – a far cry from urgent transfer business by any stretch of the imagination.

David Moyes admitted straight at the start of the summer that United could be doing most of their movement in the latter stages but few would of expected the lack of activity thus far. Manchester City and Chelsea have both strengthened gaps in their squads meaning that United have to do the same or be left behind.

A move for Everton duo Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini looks increasingly likely by the day with United so far missing out on Thiago Alcantara and top target Fabregas.

Fans wouldn’t be that frustrated if the club hadn’t set themselves up for a fall by claiming Woodward was returning on urgent transfer business as because that was said, fans understandably expected something to happen soon so when nothing did, we were angry and confused.

There are only 18 days left in this transfer window now and United have so far only brought in a 20-year-old right back as cover for Rafael. Last season, City shot themselves in the foot with poor dealings in the market and Moyes has his work cut out in the next few weeks to make sure United don’t befall the same fate this year.
