Van Persie: I want to share this award with Welbz

by Sam Peoples

Robin van Persie is a character who warmed to Manchester United fans straight away. His straight forward yet approachable demeanour helped make the 30-year-old Dutchman a real fans’ favourite from his first goal against Fulham.

Last night, his brilliant brace spearheaded United to a 4-1 victory over Swansea but instead of being gushed by Geoff Shreeves over how well he played, Van Persie refused to take the credit for himself after a fantastic performance for United’s win.

When asked by Geoff Shreeves if he scored the best goal in the game, Van Persie said: “Oh, it is going to be difficult because the fourth from Welbz was unbelievable as well so it is going to be a close call.

“I’ll share this [the man of the match trophy] with Welbz,” said van Persie.

It is typical of van Persie to do that. He is a real gentleman through and through. Although, on paper, I had Welbeck down as my man of the match because of what he has gone through in the past but either would have been worthy winners.
