Manchester United have had a £28 million bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines ‘rejected out of hand’ by Everton.
The reported bid was split into a £16 million offer for Fellaini and £12 million for Baines which goes some way short of Everton’s valuation which would place their dual cost at around £40 million.
Responding to the reports published in today’s Liverpool Echo, a spokesman for Everton confirmed the bid from United.
“We can confirm a bid was made and that it was rejected out of hand,” the spokesman said.
While a bid for the Everton duo was expected, the timing of it is curious. All summer, Fellaini had a release clause of £23 million but Moyes has waited for it to expire before going in with an offer that is way under the valuation his old club has of the Belgian.
And as for Baines, United have already had a £12 million bid for Baines rejected which raises questions over why Moyes went back with the same offer for a second time.
Despite this, Moyes’ rebuffed advances of his old players are not likely to put him off coming back with an improved offer this week if he is serious about bringing both players to Old Trafford.
