U21s Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-4 Liverpool

by Sam Peoples

Ben Amos 4 – Should have done much better on Borini’s free kick and will be hoping he could get another take at it. Was left out to dry by the defence on the other goals but still had a poor showing overall.

Guillermo Varela 4 – Most of Liverpool’s play came down Varela’s side of the pitch and he was having a nightmare trying to mark Jordan Ibe. Decent offensively but cut his runs short too often not getting involved enough in the final third.

Tom Thorpe 5 – Was composed when the pace of the match was slow but when the tempo picked up, he looked out of his depth and did not receive much help from the rest of the back-line.

Michael Keane 3 – A real off performance from Keane and his mis-kicked clearance attempt put Morgan clear in for Liverpool’s second goal. Had a lot of trouble dealing with the long ball and Liverpool’s attack were getting in behind him with ease. Improved slightly in the second half but this is one match that Keane will be looking to put behind him.

Marnick Vermijl 6 – Got up the field well with quick pass and move play that led to him setting up Cole for the first goal. Was caught up the field at times but was covered well by Charni and held together the left side better than the right. Moved into midfield when Charni was substituted off and became non-existant.

Charni Ekangamene 5 – Did a decent job at covering for Vermijl but had troubles trying to cover Borini at times. Made a few charging runs up the field. Picked up a knock and had to come off mid-way through the second half.

Davide Petrucci 4 – Was poor in position with many misplaced passes and made bad decisions on the ball with a few long shots that were well off the target.

Larnell Cole 7 – Got a goal and an assist but had a patchy performance being in and out of the game. Despite that, was involved in most of the good play from United and linked up with Januzaj and Lingard.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Had a good first half being involved in most of United’s attack and took his chance with a great finish.

Adnan Januzaj 8 – Was involved in everything and picked out Cole with a fantastic pass that led to the second goal. The best United player on the pitch and his quick feet and deft touches allowed him to glide past the Liverpool defence and take them on one-on-one. This meant he was targeted and on the receiving end of some poor challenges. Stuck out and looked like a first team player.

Angelo Henriquez 4 – Was anonymous for most of the match and did not do anything to suggest he will be pushing for the first team. Was subbed off for Tom Lawrence.

Tyler Blackett 6 – Came on for Charni and was very active up and down the wing winning a few free-kicks. His delivery was off with many of his crosses being blocked or not finding a target.

Tom Lawrence 4 – Another appearance off the bench for Lawrence and the biggest moment of his performance today was his back-pass that led to Liverpool’s 4th goal.
