U21s Player Ratings: West Brom 0-4 Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Ben Amos 6: Had a quiet game with not much to do. Only threat was the curling free-kick from Kemar Roofe which Amos dealt with well.

Guillermo Varela 7: Looked a bit shaky defensively at the start of the match but did not have to much to deal with for the most part. Used his pace and tenacity to get to the ball first and not let West Brom keep possession. Had a lot of freedom to get forward and made good passes to break through the deep West Brom defence. Made a great run into the box and looked like he could have put it away himself until a poor touch forced him to lay it off to Tom Lawrence to routinely slotted it home.

Michael Keane 7: A slower pace to the game and not much attacking threat from West Brom meant he had a much easier day and a huge improvement on his performance against Liverpool.

Jonny Evans 7: Very little to do and with West Brom playing a lone figure up front for most of the match, Evans had full control defensively and cut out most of their attacks quickly.

Tyler Blackett 7: Got forward at every opportunity and was involved in most attacks from the left. Kept possession well and was accurate with his passes.

Tom Thorpe 7: Was pushed into the midfield today and adapted well to the holding role. Sat deep for the most part letting Powell get forward. Did not let much past him and commanded the centre of the pitch. Played a good passing game, keeping it simple and always presented himself as an out ball.

Nick Powell 8: Opened the scoring with a strong header from a corner that came right after a near miss from another header off a corner. Displayed a good tackling ability but gave away a few silly fouls, one of which was at the edge of the box and gave West Brom their best chance at goal. Had good vision and picked out a couple of nice through balls to create chances. An overall good performance after returning from injury.

Jesse Lingard 8: Great link-up play and created a lot of chances. Showed good technique on the ball and involved himself in most of the play. Got himself an assist with a good performance.

Adnan Januzaj 8: Great vision and dropped deep to control the tempo of the match. Showed his physicality by being able to shield of defenders and rarely losing possession. Slotted home his penalty magnificently and again looked above the level and ready for first-team football.

Larnell Cole 8: Very good with his quick passing and was always able to pick out a free man. Was involved in most of the attacks along with Lingard and Januzaj.

Angelo Henriquez 7: A poor start to the game with some bad touches in and around the box and was mainly invisible until he popped up with the goal. Got going a lot more in the second half and was getting on the ball more with a few good shots on target. Got more involved in the link-up play and played Varela through which lead to Tom Lawrence putting away the 4th goal. Was also the one who drew the penalty shot.

Tom Lawrence 7: Another appearance off the bench and another goal. Was very lively after coming in for Januzaj in the 77th minute, exploiting the space and linking up well with Varela down the right.

Joe Rothwell 6: Came in for Powell and with the match secured he helped keep control with tidy passes around the midfield.

Andreas Pereira 6: With only about ten minutes on the pitch he did not have too much time to impress. Showed good attacking initiative but looked to force it at times.
